Global tourism company and hotel group, Iberostar, has become the latest partner in the Global Tuna Alliance (GTA) and our first hospitality company. The GTA is an independent group of retailers and supply chain companies who work to ensure that tuna ultimately meets the highest standards of environmental performance and social responsibility.
Iberostar Group is a 100% family-owned Spanish company dedicated to the tourism sector for more than 60 years. With more than 100 4 and 5-star hotels on three continents, hosting over 5million customers a year, they have a huge reach.
Iberostar strives to create a responsible tourism framework and in 2017 launched their pioneering movement for the care of the oceans, Wave of Change.
Dr. Megan Morikawa, Global Director of Sustainability for Iberostar Group said “As a business that greatly values sustainably harvested wild-caught products and depends upon the health of the oceans and products from it, participating in the Global Tuna Alliance provides our hotels with an opportunity to support initiatives that help meet our global responsible seafood demands.”
Dr Tom Pickerell, Executive Director at the Global Tuna Alliance, said: “Under the Wave of Change programme, fish and shellfish consumption at Iberostar will be 100% from responsible sources by 2025. There is much work to be done to secure a sustainable future for tuna fisheries and accordingly we are thrilled to welcome Iberostar into the GTA to work on our shared goal.”
