Market Statements on Overfished Yellowfin Tuna 2024

 

The Global Tuna Alliance (GTA) – the global voice of the tuna market, and WWF – the global conservation organisation, have developed a joint campaign ahead of the next meeting of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC).

This campaign includes a joint position statement expressing our discontent at the unacceptable status of Indian Ocean yellowfin tuna, which has been overfished and subject to overfishing since 2015. 

We are asking that Members of the IOTC cuts a deal which works for all that cuts yellowfin catches by at least 30% of 2020 levels, to rebuild the yellowfin stock within two generations.  

The market partners of the GTA and WWF have also released public-facing statements urging the IOTC to act urgently and to stop a situation where the market could be driven further away from the Indian Ocean. These can be found below.
