The social media for our Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction campaign revolves around the message “because biodiversity is everyone’s business.”
The message is an answer to the question “why does an organisation whose existence is about improving the environmental sustainability and social responsibility of tuna fishing, care about this?” Our answer, which is put succinctly in one of our social media graphics, is because healthy tuna stocks cannot thrive in an unhealthy ocean ecosystem.
The main themes in our social media follow the amplification of our joint position with the SSC & HKSSC, vocalising the market’s desire for a High Seas Treaty, progress on negotiations, what the treaty needs to contain, why it’s important we act and what the consequences are if we fail to.
The #HighSeas lie beyond national waters, i.e. outside of the Exclusive Economic Zone of any country. They are largely unexplored, deep, & are teeming with marine life (including millions of undiscovered species). The high seas are therefore critical to all life on Earth. pic.twitter.com/QG3VmJDCFU

There is a lot of activity on the #HighSeas. From shipping lanes & #CommercialFishing to pollution. With no global framework for conserving marine areas beyond national jurisdiction, there's a need for the protection of this habitat from further degradation from human activities. pic.twitter.com/mY9lyjsYDm

The @UN has committed to develop an international legally-binding treaty to manage shared marine biodiversity in the #HighSeas - Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ). The agreement encompasses all forms of life in 46% of the Earth's surface. pic.twitter.com/IRq0uNTKGt

Today, Global Tuna Alliance & @SSC_seafood partners - which includes every single UK supermarket plus many other companies - have published a joint position on Marine Biodiversity of areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ). Read the statement: https://t.co/d7UxAqAd60 pic.twitter.com/OmcPLTgt4S

In 2021, consumers want to buy sustainable seafood. @SSC_seafood & GTA partners may be competitors, but they all want to source from sustainable fisheries, which are linked to a healthy marine ecosystem. The #BBNJ treaty is an integral piece of the puzzle. https://t.co/KJury4sfeI pic.twitter.com/bjBBF8TFyY
— GlobalTuna (@GlobalTuna) November 12, 2021
Together, the GTA & @SSC_seafood believe that the BBNJ treaty has an important role to play in sustainably managing #HighSeas biodiversity, most of which remains unmonitored & unmanaged. So we're calling on Governments to advance action in 3 key areas ⬇️ https://t.co/KJury4sfeI pic.twitter.com/cf0HrUHrMf

RFMOs have a responsibility to monitor & manage impacts on the biodiversity of non-target species. Aligning RFMO responsibilities with BBNJ would be an important step towards reducing negative impacts in the #HighSeas & prioritising ecosystem health. https://t.co/KJury4sfeI pic.twitter.com/MlbJShKATK
— GlobalTuna (@GlobalTuna) November 19, 2021
Biodiversity should be on the agenda for all RFMOs. After all, we're all asking for the same thing. It would be impossible to effectively manage tuna stocks, without also prioritising the health of the marine ecosystem. A robust BBNJ treaty would form a vital part of this. pic.twitter.com/YOowI6wRda

As well as profitable seafood supply chains, GTA & SSC partners want to source from healthy & sustainable fisheries, which are directly linked to a healthy marine ecosystem. Because after all, biodiversity is everyone's business. #BBNJ #HighSeasTreaty pic.twitter.com/tRIar7V8mV

2022 is a critical year for ensuring the balance between conservation & the sustainable use of marine biological resources. The #HighSeas is one of the last global commons but only ~1% is currently protected. Transformative change is needed to manage shared marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction & a new #HighSeasTreaty that ensures the health of these ecosystems is a vital step. pic.twitter.com/327wqZ4gzX

The #HighSeas is critical to #ocean health, but increasing impacts from human activity continue to negatively affect its #biodiversity. We need a strong & ambitious #HighSeasTreaty at #IGC4. It's time to #RiseUp4TheOcean https://t.co/kn0SdBeqSz pic.twitter.com/By3nRf1KXK

There's a lot of talk about the #HighSeas at the moment. Plenty is at stake as we build up to the 4th session of the #BBNJ Intergovernmental Conference #IGC4. Shipping, industrial fishing & pollution all threaten high seas #biodiversity & it's vital that progress is made. pic.twitter.com/ww3f3RGN3t

For the first time, the seafood supply chain is engaging with Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (#BBNJ). Climate change or plastic pollution doesn't stop at maritime boundaries. What happens on the #HighSeas directly affects what happens in territorial waters.

While we are disappointed and frustrated that #BBNJ #IGC5 did not reach agreement on a #HighSeasTreaty (despite efforts by many delegations), progress was made and we will continue to use our commercial leverage to advocate for a positive outcome next time. https://t.co/4REgWqwe6s
