The social media for our IATTC 2022 campaign used the key message of ‘Transparent Tuna’ as its main focal point, with other asks forming the content to support it.
The theme of transparency covered GTA asks on Port State Measures, Transshipment and Observer Coverage, illustrated by the content with the #TransparentTuna box in the corner of some of the posts, while supporting content was produced to highlight the GTA’s additional asks for a precautionary harvest strategy for North Pacific Albacore and better Fish Aggregating Device management.
We used a combination of parodical, creative posts and more scientific, factual posts to appeal to both subject experts and a wider audience.
One month to go until the 100th session of the IATTC. Following a series of setbacks, #IATTC made good progress on conservation measures last year.

This year, GTA will be pushing IATTC delegates to keep up the momentum & take action to improve tuna transparency & traceability pic.twitter.com/RSv0GsvkUt
With uncertainty over the future of North Pacific albacore, a precautionary harvest strategy would minimise risks of over-exploitation & secure this stock's future.
— GlobalTuna (@GlobalTuna) July 11, 2022
We implore all CPCs at #IATTC to work together to agree a comprehensive, precautionary strategy. pic.twitter.com/EmZ6IxB8b9
North Pacific Albacore are currently not overfished or subject to overfishing in #IATTC waters.
— GlobalTuna (@GlobalTuna) July 13, 2022
But why wait for Albacore numbers to dwindle before adopting a harvest strategy? #IATTC must act next month to secure this stock's future. pic.twitter.com/nGkqMXySp2
Bigeye tuna in the Pacific Ocean has experienced overfishing in recent years. While #IATTC adopted conservation measures last year, more action is needed.

Setting management objectives will help us to understand where we need to get to. pic.twitter.com/AoocPao3WS
Without understanding your objective, how can you hope to achieve success?
— GlobalTuna (@GlobalTuna) July 16, 2022
As a first step to developing a full management strategy, #IATTC first needs to set clear & explicit management objectives for bigeye. pic.twitter.com/jGGqN9iKvC
It might not seem as important as upgrading to the latest iPhone, but poorly designed & poorly managed FADs are bad for ocean habitats. #IATTC must improve their FAD management. See the GTA guide for a roadmap: https://t.co/Ga6sCunucd pic.twitter.com/urd5gUPfS3

#IATTC's adoption of a Port State Measure was a big step in the right direction.
— GlobalTuna (@GlobalTuna) July 20, 2022
However, the measure will only be successful if observed widely. GTA supports the implementation of the assistance mechanism, to offer practical assistance to developing States. #TransparentTuna pic.twitter.com/raBqPRkXg6
You might question why we need to monitor our vast, featureless ocean...
— GlobalTuna (@GlobalTuna) July 22, 2022
But electronic monitoring onboard fishing vessels is as important in clamping down on illegal activities as it is on land. #IATTC must adopt minimum standards for electronic monitoring. #TransparentTuna pic.twitter.com/5Csufhd47Y
Traceability isn't just about improving fisheries management.
— GlobalTuna (@GlobalTuna) July 25, 2022
Consumers are placing increasing value on knowing exactly where their tuna comes from.
It's vital to the industry's credibility that 100% of tuna caught from IATTC's waters is accounted for. #TransparentTuna pic.twitter.com/WnjM9J8qkP
Transshipment (at-sea transfer of catch) can be a challenge in limiting our understanding of Total Actual Catch (TAC) of tuna.
— GlobalTuna (@GlobalTuna) July 27, 2022
The GTA is calling for #IATTC to adopt 100% observer coverage on board all vessels engaged at transshipment by 2024. #TransparentTuna pic.twitter.com/kZZgOqlIhy

Q. Why is improving transparency & traceability in tuna fisheries so critical?
— GlobalTuna (@GlobalTuna) July 28, 2022
A. Because you can't manage a tuna stock if you don't know the real figure getting taken out of the ocean.
Next week, IATTC must adopt measures to improve tuna transparency #TransparentTuna pic.twitter.com/NJg10Ehfdd
Yesterday, GTA partners discussed the actions needed to improve the sustainability of tuna fishing in the Eastern Pacific at next week’s #IATTC meeting with delegations from Chile, Ecuador & Mexico.
