The social media for our WCPFC 2022 campaign revolved around our core message of “Don’t lose the label.” This message encapsulated the threat that tuna fisheries in the WCPO were facing at the possible loss of the MSC certification.
We used consumer survey data, catch data and quotes from our partners to create a series of social media posts. We also utilised some clever creative concepts around the idea of “prevention,” for example placing our audience in the future where tuna is only something you can see at a museum or hear about from your grandparents or by using the domino effect, visualising the idea that without action, these fisheries are heading towards the loss of their MSC status.
Today @MSCecolabel published a factsheet outlining threats to MSC-certified Western Central Pacific #tuna. If the #WCPFC fails to make significant progress in establishing robust management measures, many MSC-certified tuna fisheries could face suspension https://t.co/AYOz8qXE0k pic.twitter.com/mg5OUtmZYS

The GTA supports @MSCecolabel in calling for improved harvest strategies across all #tuna stocks in the Western & Central Pacific Ocean. It'll mean all tuna sourced from this region can remain MSC-certified. But how can the #WCPFC achieve this? https://t.co/cSrV7wk7eI pic.twitter.com/K4hAAUYRku

Tuna fisheries in the Western Central Pacific Ocean are at tipping point & the time to act is NOW. Failure to implement #HarvestStrategies could lead to widespread loss of MSC certification for these fisheries. GTA partners are calling for action to avoid a chain of consequences. pic.twitter.com/xqiSky4EZK

A takeaway from our #WesternCentralPacific Fisheries Commission working group was that NGOs & GTA partners are fully aligned in what they are calling for. Together they have the power to put significant pressure on WCPFC to improve #tuna mgmt & make #HarvestStrategies a priority. pic.twitter.com/TnuBwuCCNM

The Global Tuna Alliance is committed to improving the sustainability of the tuna sector. Tuna from the Western Central Pacific is at risk of losing its @MSCecolabel. We therefore call on the #WCPFC to implement harvest strategies - #DontLoseTheLabel pic.twitter.com/VA0YfQOQvV

Consumer demand for #SustainableSeafood is undeniable. They're concerned about the environmental impact of the food they eat & #tuna is no different. We call on fisheries in the Western Central Pacific to develop effective harvest strategies before it's too late. pic.twitter.com/SllidQzKDQ

Tuna fisheries in the Western Central Pacific Ocean are at risk of losing their @MSCecolabel certification. We urgently call on the #WCPFC to develop effective harvest strategies to protect the sustainability of #tuna & protect the label our consumers recognise. #DontLoseTheLabel pic.twitter.com/2HX7Frt8gp

The global volume of @MSCecolabel tuna products has more than doubled in 3yrs. The demand for sustainable seafood isn't a passing trend; its a must-have for consumers. The WCPFC needs to listen to the voice of the market & accelerate action before it's too late. #DontLoseTheLabel pic.twitter.com/22CfqOnxJK

82%* of consumers believe that seafood needs to be protected for future generations. Yet in the Western Central Pacific, tuna is fished without effective harvest strategies, putting its sustainability at risk. Don’t let this be the only way future generations hear about tuna. pic.twitter.com/vTa0VHTUpA

112 supply chain companies - including 17 of the top 20 global retailers - have written to the #WCPFC, calling for urgent action to develop comprehensive harvest strategies across all tuna stocks, to prevent the loss of @MSCecolabel certification. https://t.co/HW9NQszA6f pic.twitter.com/e1ysz1IRX0

Consumer behaviour drives change. Influential retailers & supply chain companies increasingly report consumers WANT to buy sustainable products. For our partners to continue to source tuna from the Western Central Pacific, fisheries there have to be sustainable. #DontLoseTheLabel pic.twitter.com/ZFYWbYJyfn

82% of consumers believe that seafood must be protected for future generations. But tuna in the Western Central Pacific is facing a threat to its future sustainability. If 82% of consumers think this, we must listen to them; the WCPFC must develop effective harvest strategies. pic.twitter.com/dKJj8q1XDQ

Perhaps you only buy free-range eggs? Or you do a #MeatFreeMonday? Looking for the @MSCecolabel on your seafood is also a sign you’re a conscious shopper. But this label is at risk if fisheries in the Western Central Pacific fail to develop harvest strategies. #DontLoseTheLabel pic.twitter.com/N9h1XYYPSx

June 2023 may seem far away, but the consequences of inaction now have a domino effect. Progression continues to be put on pause, but a deadline looms. If WCPFC cannot complete its workplans by Dec 2022, fisheries in the WCPO are at risk of MSC label suspension. #DontLoseTheLabel pic.twitter.com/bPqJxFUV7P

WCPFC is only RFMO with all tuna stocks in the 'green'. This December they can continue their progressive approach and establish a scientist/manager dialogue group for consideration of harvest strategy issues. Group’s first meeting must take place in 2022. https://t.co/zYBgeghDiL pic.twitter.com/nOizqe105p

Are you 1 of them? Our partners pride themselves on securing seafood from fisheries certified by the @MSCecolabel so you can shop with ease of mind. Our partners want to provide their consumers with the most #SustainableSeafood. #Tuna in the Western Central Pacific is slipping through the net of #sustainable management. If, in Dec 2021, the #WCPFC can implement interim decisions on tuna harvest strategies, it would be on track to complete its workplans by Dec 2022. A 'wasted opportunity' - what the GTA is calling the recent #WCPFC commission meeting.
